Explanation:

Notice the presence of the definite article (‘the’) in some of these sentences (Duff p27-8). This is an extremely important pattern to know well, since it is in the same form whichever declension (family) of nouns it precedes. It can therefore be an extremely useful clue to the case (and therefore function in the sentence) of an unknown noun.
